W.Bro Ivor Vivian Wilkins
Ivor Wilkins was born in 1933 in Montagu Street, Rodbourne, Swindon and, as a young child, moved to Moredon Road in Swindon where he attended Rodbourne Cheney School.
When he left school he apprenticed as an electrician in Old Town before joining the Swindon Railway Works as an electrician. He also lectured at the British Rail Engineering College in Newburn Crescent.
He then worked for Westinghouse Engineering as a track maintenance engineer where he stayed until his retirement.
He married his wife, Vera, in 1965 at Standlake in Oxfordshire.
His interests included railways and together they travelled extensively throughout Europe by train on many holidays.
Ivor also enjoyed making furniture in his workshop and he was very knowledgeable about wood.
His main interest, however, was his garden and he spent many hours keeping his garden pristine. For several years he was the president of the Swindon Horticultural Society.
Ivor’s masonic career was quite extensive and began when he was initiated into Pleydell Lodge No 4687 on 27th January 1981 and attained the Chair of KS in 1993. He was honoured with his first Provincial Appointment of PProvAGDC in 1998 and promoted to PProvGReg in 2004. He was also a member of Wiltshire Masters Lodge No 6731 from 1995 to 2001.
He was exalted into the Holy Royal Arch in Wiltshire Chapter No 355 in 1983 and became the Most Excellent Zerubbabel in 1996. Ivor was awarded the active Provincial Grand Chapter rank of ProvGStB in 1998 and promoted to PProvGSoj in 2003. He was elected as an honorary member of Wiltshire Chapter in 2014.
Ivor was advanced into the Mark degree in 1982 in Swindon Keystone Lodge No 401 and was in the chair in 1990. He also joined Wiltshire Installed Mark Masters Lodge No 1460 in 1993.
He was a Founder (and the first Master) of Wiltshire Downs Lodge of Mark Master Mason No 1843 in 2004 and received the Provincial Honours of PPrSGW in 2005.
Ivor was also elevated in Goddard Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners No 401 in 1983 and was in the chair in 1995 & 1996. In 2011 he attained RAM Grand Rank and was elected as an honorary member of Goddard Lodge earlier this year.
Vera sadly passed away in May 2012 and Ivor's health and mobility started to deteriorate gradually. He was, however, steadfastly determined to stay in his house and refused to leave to go into residential care. He had a network of friends, neighbours and family who helped him maintain a good quality of life and he would still cook himself a meal every day except Sundays when his life-
Until recently his mind was as sharp as ever and he had a remarkable memory and never forgot a name or date. Unfortunately, Ivor had a fall at home and was taken into Great Western Hospital where his health rapidly deteriorated and he passed away during the evening of Saturday 8th October.
Ivor and Vera had no children and his only surviving family are his distant cousin and her family from Foxham. Nevertheless, he was known and respected by many, both within freemasonry and outside, and will be greatly missed.
